AKC Advanced S.A.F.E. Program

Corina Stammworthy

As reputable and quality pet care professionals, groomers should consider the safety and welfare of the pets entrusted to their care. The Safety in Salon course will review best practices focusing on pet care, health, and safety. Topics covered include accident avoidance, disease awareness, and sanitation.

This course builds off the AKC Safety in the Salon curriculum and it is required as a prerequisite before taking this class. This follow up course will cover more advanced topics in sanitation, emergency preparation, and salon best practices.

The Importance of the Underside

Blake Hernandez

Ever notice a pattern among trainee groomers where they put all their focus into the finish work on outer legs, torso, and heads, while the finished effect was still scruffy and unkempt because they have completely ignored the undersides of the dog? Sadly, the undersides of a groom are not the most sexy or exciting, and rarely do they get much attention, but they are actually incredibly important to a well-groomed, well-finished and balanced dog. Join Jennifer for this visually-documented deep dive into armpits, groins, sanitary trims, paw pads, under-ears, and all the other places in a groom not easily seen but very important—especially to the dog!

Pet Strips, a.k.a Strip and Clip

Lara Latshaw

Are you interested in hand stripping, but would rather avoid the time commitment and extra cost associated with an entire hand strip? Here’s your chance to learn about the “strip and clip.” This is an excellent option for many wire-coated breeds as well as wire mixes when you’d like to make an effort to save the coat color and texture, to a point, but not put in the time and effort required for an entire hand strip.

With this hour-long class, you will learn a bit about the science behind hand striping; the main portion of the course will be going into detail about how to card, strip, and then finish with a clipped part of the groom. This saves you time on the groom while allowing you to keep an authentic look, color, and texture for a wire-coated dog.
